artway down the slaves’ hall, Douglas got to his feet and started walking. Seemed safe enough, now that Allen was gone. Allen. He shuddered at the thought. Of the way Allen had used him, spoken to him, treated him like absolute dirt.

He was a slave, yes, but with Nikolai he’d been valuable and treasured. With Allen, he felt lower than an animal. Maybe even lower than Mat.

Well, he could still prove himself. He just had to regroup. Maybe the other pleasure slaves would give him some advice on how to get into Allen’s good graces. How to seduce him, how to please him, maybe even how to make him smile. Douglas was clever, and a quick study. He’d work it out.

When he found the room Nerdy—ahem, Nedry—had pointed out as his quarters, he forced himself not to knock. This was his space now. He belonged here. He opened the door.

Despite it still being midmorning, the room was dark inside, and quiet. There were six beds, just like before, but now five of them were occupied. Five men, all as slight as him, all fast asleep. Maybe they’d just worked a night shift? The one closest to the door had his blanket thrown off, and in the light from the hallway, Douglas could see he was covered in body glitter, and both nipples were pierced with gold rings. Douglas flushed and quickly looked away.

He wished they were awake to welcome him and tell him their names. He wanted to ask them questions, wanted to know what their schedule was—whether they worked nights and slept days as a matter of course, or if this was a one-time thing—what the expectations were. He wanted so badly to know his role. He felt unmoored, untethered, terrified. But they were all fast asleep, and he knew he wouldn’t make too many friends if he woke them. So he gently shut the door behind him and crept into the room, headed for the empty bed. He toed out of his shoes—ahhh, God, it felt so good to be rid of those things, especially with the brand still tender—and sat down. Unclasped his itching bra and rolled down his thigh-high stockings. He felt almost human again.

Douglas Petrovic, cherished pet. Not a nameless whore with a sloppy cunt.

He wanted a shower and to wash his face, but he didn’t know if there was protocol about the bathrooms. He didn’t want to do anything wrong. Was terrified of it, actually. And he was tired, too, despite the hour. Could use the rest. If the others were sleeping, maybe he was supposed to, as well. He drew back the covers and climbed into his new bed, narrow and not very comfortable, not compared to his bed at Nikolai’s, and definitely not compared to Nikolai’s massive four-poster with its thick duvet and piles of pillows he could sink into.

He supposed he should feel happy he had a bed and a pillow at all. He didn’t want to think of where Mat was going to wind up sleeping tonight, if he slept at all.
